How to add a Cable TV connection to your Mid 80's Toyota MotorHome

Those Toyota motorhomes produced in the early to middle 1980s did not have any connection for a cable tv hookup. I describe how I added a cable tv connection to my 1985 Toyota Motor Home.

We found our slot in the RV park after checking in at the office. I lined up the Toyota Motor Home and hooked up the utilities. We were ready to settle in and spend the evening after a long day on the road. I raised the tv antenna and flipped on the set, hoping to see a watchable picture. No luck, all the channels were snowy hash with a few flickers of movement. Outside on the the power box, there was a cable tv connector. 56 channels were included with the nights rent of the space but I did not have a decent way to connect except run the cable through the door and across the floor. I had to change this.

The electrical cord bay is the ideal place for the cable connector.

I installed a grounding tap connector on the side of the cabinet just inside the door on the electric cord bay. This allows me to run the cable tv line through the same opening that the electrical cord uses. This is on the same side of the rv that the utilities are located on so everything lines up just fine.

The cable line runs up the corner behind the curtain. The inside cable line is routed from the grounding tap up the corner of the wall and the bathroom wall. It is hidden behind the curtain and lounge cushion. It connects to one input port of a cable splitter.

The built in tv connection is on the other side of the camper.

Originally, the Dolphin had the tv connection and amplifier in the end of the galley overhead cabinets. This made for an awkward place to connect the tv. There was no easy place to put a tv that would not be in the way.

I connected the tv antenna port to the other port of the splitter.

I screwed a cable line on the connector of the tv amplifier and routed the cable along the wall over the rear bed and into the overhead cabinets that run across the rear of the camper. It then enters the closet and then the overhead cabinets on the street side of the camper. I routed it down through the bottom of the over head cabinet and connected it to the other port of the cable splitter.

Now I have both a cable tv connection and an antenna tv connection

The cable tv splitter automatically combines the inputs into one output. This output is connected to the 15 inch LCD tv that we set on the shelf fastened to the bathroom wall. This places the tv up high, out of the way and there are no cables intruding into our small living space.

With a little study and thought, you can set up a tv distribution system in your Toyota motorhome that will allow you to automatically see either cable tv or antenna tv depending on your location.
