Add Roof Top Storage Capacity to Your Toyota Motor Home
Don't pay hundreds of dollars for a roof top storage system. With a couple of plastic tool boxes from Walmart, I have increased the storage capacity. The small size of the Toyota Motor Home limits the storage capacity. When we would go out on a long trip, just finding spots for all the "treasures" we picked up along the way was difficult. We soon had the main storage area under the rear bed stuffed full of boxes and bags of "stuff". After a couple of trips in 2005, I decided to investigate a roof top storage system. I had visions of a sleek plastic cargo box that would not add much wind resistance. After all, I had seen them riding on top of many SUVs here in Colorado during the winter ski season. I soon found just what I thought I wanted on display at a Yakima rack retail display in a Sporting Goods store at the mall. "Yikes" I thought, when I finally spotted the price tag. That sleek plastic box cost over $500 not including the mounting hardware. I decided there had to be a better way. I looked at the cloth based systems with tie down straps and had visions of driving the camper through a rain storm and either loosing the whole setup off the top when the straps unfastened or soaking the contents through seepage in the seams. Having camped in "waterproof" tents, I realized that any cloth solution would not be totally water proof. One day I was in the automotive area at the local Walmart and spotted a plastic storage box with a hinged lid for under $20. I grabbed two and went home to "engineer" the rest of the system. I mounted the boxes on two pieces of aluminum tubing using some small bolts from the hardware department. I then used "U" bolts to fasten the tubing and boxes to the existing roof rack on the camper. This way, nothing sits on the roof of the camper and the boxes are securely mounted edge on toward the direction of travel. They are any thing but sleek and stylish, but then nothing else on my Toyota is either.
